Home again home again jiggity jig!

So where was I?...Ohh yea the ride...  I completed 31.27 miles with and average speed of 11.1mph... (a smidge slower than they would have desired ;-))...Found the quote I'd misread like 1000 times "These rides are slow paced, seldom average more than 12-14 miles per hour."  Oopsie... that was me yesterday a pokey pete ;-).  I was flying sometimes, heck at mile 19, I had an avg speed of 21.5 and peaked out at 32mph.  Wow that's flying!   Shush, yes it was downhill but let me sit here and revel in my glory!

Mom was sweet, she toughed it out no matter how slow I chugged along trying to get me to stop panting.  I hope it didn't hurt her too badly.  I had to chuckle at one point.  After her son waved on the other 2 riders, he looped back to us to bring us in.  We were sitting at a right hand turn and as we took off, she glanced back to check that there were still no cars.  She tagged him solidly and had to jump off her bike.  I really anticipated her hitting the pavement (twas a nice ballet/pommel horse type move that got both her legs over the bar and her standing upright.)  Her assertion was that she didn't ditch the bike, and it didn't hit the ground.  I'm not so certain, but if it didn't... swell.  He laughed tolerantly and said at least it was her that hit him.

Then as we were trucking along around mile 25 for me, my left calf let me have it. I'd been kind of having some warnings that a cramp was brewing but wasn't truly sure what to do.  Then full bore cramp; I let lose some full blown expletive and jumped of my bike massaging my cramp vigorously.  At that point, I wasn't sure how to complete the ride cause I think we were about 5 miles or so from the shop and another 8 miles home from there.  Luckily for me, we were looping past a road that took me home!  Yay, so it worked out almost perfectly and I was home in a little over 30 miles.  I have been arnica gellin' and rubbing my calf, lots of water and 3 bananas.  It is still tweaked and showing a small visible lump when i flex.  Oh well it could be worse.

I hated riding with the group.  It made me feel like a real slacker, like I was constantly holding them back.  I may post a request for co-riders on the PMC site... or I may just tough it out.  Realize that I'll likely take 8 hours to finish each leg and leave it at that.   Now that we are home again, I just finished mowing the lawn.  I figure that didn't hurt so I must be doing ok.  I need to decipher how in the heck I'll ride all these miles over the next few months.  Next weekend maybe I'll try to re-ride what we just did... or maybe I'll chug up the bike path and then a loop around Devens.  The link below isn't my exact ride, but an approximation ( i was too lazy to export, convert, import and so n all the pts.... anyhow... here's a sketchy idea of what I have on tap.

Shush you're doing fine! When you have those long ones, you really need the electrolyte balance to avoid the cramps. You maxed out faster than I did on my bike! (Until today!)

You have to get used to group riding, and realize that it's a valuable thing with the right group. The first one probably does feel rather sucky, I know the poky little puppy feeling quite well.

Very good that you live up north. I can't imagine having to train through July. I think that your schedule is totally doable.

Have you checked out mapmyride.com for routes?

I have used bikely more than that... but mapmyride was suggested this weekend so I thought i'd give it a shot. I'm just trying to add in the loop to home on Devens.... Guess we'll see. thanks for the moral support.....
